The following 12 posts will include the will, inventory and account of Philip Singer of Hamilton Twp. Northampton, Co., PA. The will was written 19 March 1815 and probated 30 Jan. 1819. The probate page is, for the most part, unreadable and is not included in the following posts. The text of the will is found here. The inventory was taken 16 Feb. 1819 by Sebastian Brong and Henry Shoemaker. The account was taken by George Keller, the will’s executor, on 29 March 1821. John Philip Singer, son of Palatine immigrants Johannes and Catharine Singer, was the grandfather of Sally Ann Singer. Sally married Henry Siptroth in 1843. Henry and Sally were the grandparents of Celesta Susan Siptroth who married William Snyder Andress in 1903. William and Celesta are my great grandparents. I thank my cousin Susan for sending me Philip Singer’s probate documents. She has been a great help in the collection of information on the Singer family. This will, inventory and account record are filed in the Northampton County courthouse, Easton, PA. Below is the text of Philip’s will. Following this blog posting will be other posts containing the images of the documents.

Last Will & Testament

In the name of God Amen The Nineteenth Day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifteen. I Philip Singer of Hamilton Township in the County of Northampton and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, yeoman, being sick and low in strength of body yet of sound mind and disposing mind, memory, and understanding, [?thanks?] be God for the same and all other mercies conferred upon one and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die and being willing and desirous to settle all my worldly affairs in the best manner, am able so that my children may in peace enjoy those goods wherewith it hath pleased God to bless my honest industry in the world, I thought fit to make this my last will and testament in manner following. In the name of God amen I Henry Siptroth of the Township of Jackson in the County of Monroe and the state of Pennsylvania Being sick and weak in Body but of sound mind memory and understanding praise be to God for it Considering the uncertainty of the time thereof and to the end I may be the better prepared to leave this world whenever it shall please God to Call me hence, do therefore make and declare this my last will and Testament in the manner following

First and Principally I commend my Soul into the hands Almighty God my creator and direct my body decently interred Corresponding with my Estate and Situation in life I order that all my just debts Funeral Expenses and Charges of Proving this my will be in the first place fully paid and satisfied, I give and bequeath all my messuage lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever situate laying and being in the Township of Jackson County and state aforesaid unto my dear wife Sally absolutely for her own use and controle forever

I also give and bequeath to my said wife all my Household goods and all Personal Estate now belonging to me whatsoever

I will that my said wife shall pay out of my Personal Estate all Just debts and expense due and owing by me and to furnish means and assist my Executor herein after mentioned in settling up my estate and to carry out the Provisions of this my will And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint Christian Siptroth (Note: “Amandas Possinger” crossed out) of Jackson Township Executor of this my will In witness whereof I the said Testator Henry Siptroth have to this my Last Will and Testament set my hand and seal the 7th day of March A.D. 1896

Warren Register for the probate of Wills and granting of letters of Administration, in and for said county, personally appeared John A. Singer & Jerome Heller the two subscribing witnesses to the annexed instrument of writing - dated the 7th day of March A.D. 1896 - purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Henry Siptroth - late of Jackson Township, said county, deceased, and after being duly sworn according to law, did, thereupon severally declare and say, that they were present and saw and heard Henry Siptroth the testator sign, seal, publish, pronounce and declare the annexed instrument of writing, us, and for His last Will and Testament, and that at the time of so doing He was of perfect and sound mind, memory and understanding, to the best of their knowledge, observation and belief, and that they subscribed their name to said last Will and Testament in the presence of, and request of the Testator and in the presence of each other. Whereupon, it is by the said Register considered and adjudged, that the said Will duly proven to be the last Will and Testament of the said Henry Siptroth and the same is accordingly admitted to Probate.

IN CONFORMITY with the foregoing Will and Probate thereof, letters testamentary were granted to Christian Siptroth (son) the Executor therein named, He having first been duly sworn according to law well and truly to administer the goods and chattels, rights and credits of the said Testator make a true and prefect Inventory thereof, and exhibit the same into the Register’s Office, at Stroudsburg, within thirty days from the date hereof, and render a true account of His whole administration within one year, or when thereunto legally required, and well and truly comply with the provisions of the law relating to collateral inheritance.

The Siptroth Family

Henry Siptroth was born in January of 1820 in Germany. The origin of the Siptroth family (also spelled Siebtroth) is presently unclear, the name however may be a compound of Sippe and Treowth, meaning “Loyal Clan” or “Family of Truth.” J.H. Beers in the Commemorative Biographical Record of Northeast Pennsylvania (page 708) wrote that Henry was a native of Bavaria. However, federal census records indicate differently. In 1850 and 60 Henry’s place of birth is recorded as Germany. In 1870 his birthplace is identified as Baden and in 1880 “Swartzburg.” There is no Swartzburg in Baden or Bavaria, but in Baden, north of Freudenstadt, within the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) is the village of Schwarzenberg. This may be where Henry was from. Immigration and naturalization records have yet to surface, however, he arrived in Pennsylvania before April 1843 when he was married to Sally Ann Singer. (Beers indicates that Henry came to America when a boy.) Henry and Sally resided in Jackson Township, Monroe County, PA, just a few miles north of Jackson Corners. Henry was a carpenter and a mason. Sally, also known as Sarah, was the daughter of John Singer and Susanna Possinger of Monroe County. She was born 19 Jan. 1821. Henry and Sally were the parents of nine children, seven living into adulthood: Margaret, Oliver, Franklin, Edward, Christian, Elizabeth, Elias, Alvesta, and Alexander. Henry died 22 March 1896. His Last Will & Testament is filed (680T) in the Monroe County Courthouse, Stroudsburg. After Henry’s death Sally resided with her son Christian. She died in 1907. They were buried in the cemetery adjoining St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Appenzell (formerly Jackson Corners.) I visited the cemetery in 2005 but was unable to locate their gravestones.

Henry Siptroth and Sarah Sally Ann Singer had the following children:

I. Edward Siptroth died at a young age. (Ref: Beers)

II. Margaret M. Siptroth was born in August 1844. She married Conrad Morningstar ca. 1874. They lived in Colley, Sullivan Co., PA. Conrad, born in July 1846, was a Bavarian immigrant. They had three children: Franklin, Elizabeth, and Ray. Conrad died in 1928 and Margaret in 1940. They were buried in Colley Cemetery

III. Oliver Siptroth was born in 1849. (Additional information forthcoming.)

IV. Franklin Siptroth was born in 1850. (Additional information forthcoming.)

V. Christian Henry Siptroth was born 28 March 1852. (Additional information forthcoming.)

VI. Elizabeth Siptroth was born in 1853. She married Joseph H. Zacharias ca. 1873. He was born ca. 1852 to Daniel and Mary (Singer) Zacharias of Hamilton Twp., Monroe Co. Joseph and Elizabeth had two children: Amzi, b. ca. 1874, and Alva, b. ca. 1877.

VII. Elias George Siptroth was born 31 May 1858 and died young.

VIII. Alvesta Siptroth was born in April 1860. She married Michael Hardenstein, son of Jacob and Anna M. Hardenstein of Paradise Township, Monroe Co. He was born in July 1856. His father, Jacob, was from Bavaria. Michael and Alvesta lived in Chestnut Hill Twp., Monroe Co. They had one child who died before 1910.

IX. Alexander Siptroth was born in 1863. (Additional information forthcoming.)
